Welcome to the Love Food Hate Waste blog

January 19, 2010

Hello and welcome to the new Love Food Hate Waste blog!

So what is Love Food Hate Waste?

Most of us don’t realise the amount of food we throw away, but the average household is wasting £430 worth of good food every year.  That’s why we developed the Love Food Hate Waste campaign, to help raise awareness of the 570,000 tonnes of food wasted in Scotland every year and, most importantly, to provide people with practical information and advice to reduce food waste and save money too.

LFHW Goes Digital

If you’re a food lover who likes their gadgets, you’ll be pleased to hear we’ve just launched the first ever iPhone app to help people reduce food waste.  Our iPhone application is the ultimate interactive tool to help you plan your food shopping and portion sizes and find tasty recipes for the food you already have in your cupboard or fridge/freezer. You can download the app for free from iTunes.

The app is part of our new digital campaign which also includes some great new features on our website as well as our new Facebook page, Twitter account (@wasteawarefood)and this Blog, which we hope will keep you up to date with all the latest news and events from Love Food Hate Waste.

We also hope our new digital campaign will give you the opportunity to talk with other people interested in making the most of the food they buy and that you’ll share your tried and tested recipes and ideas.

Useful Tools

Both our website and our iPhone app have a portion size planner and a recipe finder for leftover ingredients.

The portion size planner allows you to enter the ingredients you are using to prepare a meal and select the number of adult and child portions you are preparing. The planner then presents how much of each ingredient is required, thus avoiding any unnecessary wastage.

The novel recipe finder is like a back-to-front recipe book; you input the ingredients that you already have available at home and it makes recipe suggestions accordingly. This is a fantastic way of finding creative ways of using up leftover food.

The iPhone application also has additional features including a weekly meal planner, shopping list and a hints and tips section.

With the weekly meal planner, you can plan and write down what meals you are going to have throughout the week ahead. You can then create a shopping list so you only buy what you need.

You can follow us on Twitter, become a fan of our Facebook page, return to the blog for regular updates and download the iPhone app.
